Ruth Edison

October 7, 1947 to June 25, 2024

Obituary

Born October 7, 1947, passed peacefully away surrounded by her loving children and grandchildren on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer. Ruth was born in Gander, the eldest of five children. Her family was one of the first three families to build a home on what is the townsite of Gander, moving from what was known as the ‘Army Side’. After completing high school at Gander Collegiate, she chose to train as a nurse at the General Hospital School of Nursing. She paused her nursing career to raise her three young children and returned to nursing in later years. Ruth loved to garden and assemble massively complicated jigsaw puzzles. She was often found sitting at the kitchen table, sipping coffee and reading, or out enjoying the sun and cool breeze on the patio deck over-looking beautiful Conception Bay. She was a huge supporter of her kids and took a keen interest in everything they were involved with, this enthusiasm continued with each of her grandchildren. She could always be found on the sidelines cheering them on, keeping up with the next event, or in her car driving one of them to a venue or starting line. She was so very proud. Everyone that knew her, recognized her as Newfoundland’s loudest cheerleader for everything and anything curling.

Predeceased by her parents, Lloyd and Muriel Mercer; grandparents, Bethlehem and Sophie Mercer and Stewart and Blanche Roberts; and special Uncle, Harold. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories, her son Christopher; daughter Wendy (Craig), granddaughters Hannah and Caroline; son Ian (Tracy), grandchildren Liam and Alexandra; brothers Harry (Lorna); Brian (Marilyn); Norm; George (Janet); nieces, nephews and grand puppies; Cooper, Hudson and Vaquero.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held from 9:30am – 11:30am, followed by a small service on Saturday, June 29, 2024, at Stacey’s Funeral Home, 60 Roe Avenue, Gander, NL. Interment to follow at All Saints Cemetery, Memorial Drive, Gander, NL.

The family wish to express their sincere gratitude to Dr. Siddiqui, Dr. Holmes, Dr. Fardy, Dr. Hurley, special nurse Anne Marie Lambert as well as the staff at the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre, Community Health and the Community Paramedicine Program for their kind support and care shown to Ruth during her illness.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Ruth’s memory to the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre or James Paton Memorial Hospital.

Any time mom was signing off from phone calls or departing visitors, she would simply say “toodleloo”….so mom, toodleloo.
