Roy Edward Penney

February 25, 1949 to June 18, 2024

Obituary

Roy passed suddenly, yet peacefully, away at home. We are so glad that we got to spend one more Father’s Day weekend with him as it left us with wonderful memories to hold dear and fills our hearts to know how happy his last days were.

He is predeceased by his parents Miriam and Victor Penney and his buddies Star and Muller.

Leaving to mourn his daughter Cheryl, who was the love of his life, son-in-law and friend Stephen Fisher, brother Wayne (Joan) Penney and family, his ex-wife Ingrid Strelow and her partner Terrence Doyle who he considered two of his closest friends, as well as many other family members across Newfoundland.

Roy was born on February 25th, 1949, in Old Perlican and grew up in Buchans. He moved to New York to play hockey when he was 19 and then to St. John’s in the early 1970’s to play with the St. John’s Caps. In his later years, he was happiest having a coffee with friends and family, going for a walk with his daughter, sharing a meal with family, or simply puttering around the garden or at the cabin. He lived for the simple, yet meaningful things in life.

Following his wishes there will be no visitation or funeral. Instead, close family and friends will gather in his honour at a later time.

Donations can be made in his name to Heavenly Creatures or Beagle Paws.

Condolences to his family

My condolences to Roy’s family. We were friends and classmates growing up in Buchans. RIP my friend..

So shocked and saddened to read of Roy’s passing.. Until a few weeks ago Roy was my next door neighbour for many years and we shared many long chats in our shared driveway. Every summer I would get the same question – “Are you going to use your rhubarb? ” He wanted it for his beloved daughter. My condoences to his family

Our sincere condolences to the Penny family. It has to be at least 50 years since Roy and I were last together. We were teammates on the St. John’s Caps. Oh what wonderful memories. I still recall Roy flying down the ice calling for the puck. He was a tremendous player and always a pleasure to be around. RIP my friend.
