It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Michael Stead Crawford on June 8th, 2024, at age 46, after a brief but courageous fight with cancer. He was predeceased by father-in-law Rhodie Mercer; and uncles Gerard Murphy and Donald Murphy.

Leaving to mourn are his wife, Adrienne Mercer and daughter, his princess, Claire Crawford; parents Stead and Elizabeth; mother-in-law Wendy Mercer; sister Andrea (Lee Boswell); brother-in-law Aaron Mercer (Vanessa); nieces Ellie Mercer and Haylee Boswell; aunts Marie Armstrong (Frank), Carmelita Porter (Stuart), Clare Murphy, and Tina Murphy; uncles Ted Murphy (Doris) and Harry Crawford (Lillian); and a large circle of cousins, family, colleagues and friends.

Always in search of knowledge and information, Michael completed a B. Sc at Memorial University in 1999, an M. Ed at the University of New Brunswick in 2006, and an MBA at the Royal Military College of Canada in 2018. He worked in information technology and project management with several organizations during his career, and particularly enjoyed business travel, if only for the airline status.  Michael never shied away from helping out, and often volunteered his time to assist any community organization in which he was involved – there are too many to list.

His sense of dedication and loyalty was fostered through his involvement with Air Cadets and the Cadet movement.  Major Crawford was initially involved as an air cadet with 880 and rose through ranks holding various positions, including Commanding Officer of 510 Lions RCACS.  He continued his involvement most recently with the Newfoundland and Labrador Area Office. He was appointed as an Aide-de-Camp serving the past three Lieutenant Governors of Newfoundland and Labrador, a role in which he took great pride and enjoyment.

Special thanks are extended to Dr. Dawn Armstrong and the nurses and staff of 4NorthB at the Health Sciences Centre for their compassion and care.

Visitation will take place at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road on Tuesday, June 11th from noon to 9pm.  Funeral Service will be held at the Basilica of St. John the Baptist, Military Road, on Wednesday June 12th at 11am.  Cremation has taken place and inurnment to follow at Forest Road Anglican Cemetery following the service.

In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to the College of the North Atlantic (Don Murphy Memorial Bursary), the Canadian Cancer Society, or a charity of one’s choice.

The family would like to invite people to a reception following the service/inurnment at Bally Haly Country Club, Golf Course Road.

Please note that Carnell’s Funeral Home is a nut free building, due to a staff member with a severe allergy. Thank you for your understanding.

Libby and Stead, I just learned of Michael’s death. My heart breaks for you as his parents and for his family. My own grief began over 33 years ago when my son, Paul, died. There are no words that can capture the depth and breadth of the incredible sorrow that you are experiencing, Just know that you aren’t alone on this journey. Sending love and condolences. Rest easy, Michael.

Stead and Libby,
Paul and I only heard about Michael’s illness and death today. We never had the pleasure of meeting your son but from everything we’ve heard and read about him, he was a remarkable man who had the love and respect of an enormous circle of family, friends, acquaintances and co-workers. It’s unbelievably sad for parents to lose a child of any age, and we hope you can find some comfort in wonderful memories of his life. We’re sending our deepest condolences to you both, and also to Adrienne and Claire.

Sending sincere condolences to Mike’s family and friends. We became acquainted because of dogs and dog training, particularly in the search and rescue world. Mike and Maddie were very proud members of Newfoundland Search Dogs and many hours were spent outdoors training in the worst weather Newfoundland has to offer. This world is a better place because of people like Mike. Rest in Peace

Stead and Libby,
The sincerest of condolences to you and your family on the passing of your son Michael.
I remember you both very well from working at Social Services years ago. Some people you never forget.

His legacy will endure, and I hope you find solace in the memories of his lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Dear Adrienne and Family,

May you find warmth in the memories that you created as a family..

Sarah

Stead and Libby, please accept my sincerest condolences for the loss of your fine son. It has been many years since I last saw you both. Michael would have probably been only started at university. How the years fly by! And, he accomplished so much! I can only imagine how difficult it has been for you to watch him fight this last battle and lose. I hope your memories of him help comfort you at this very difficult time.

May you find comfort in your memories and the knowledge that he left a lasting impact on all who knew him.

Mike was the Commanding Officer of 510 Lions when I arrived to my first night as a cadet. He spoke to me as if I was any other adult not down to, that has kept with me since on how to treat others. He was a fierce leader at drill practice and always a pleasure to catch up with when I became a CIC officer myself.

His mentorship, leadership and wit will be missed by myself and thousands of others in the cadet community.

Stead, Libby, Adrienne and families

Andrea, Chris, Kaitlyn and Ryan

Adrienne and Claire
I’ve gotten to know you from your mom (Wendy) , my neighbour and friend. . I felt her sadness and her love every time she spoke about Michael’s illness and passing. Your loss cannot be put into words.
Yesterday, on our walk through Government grounds, we stopped and chatted one of the workers there at the greenhouse. He told us it was a very bad day for him, because he had lost one of the best men that had ever worked with the lieutenant governor. It was your Michael.
God bless you all and I’m sure the memories you made together will sustain you as you move forward without him.
Kay and Peter Dimmell

Adrienne, Wendy and family, I’m so sorry for your loss. Thinking of you all.

Mike was Chief Warrant Officer Crawford when I joined 880 many years ago. He was my first impression of Air Cadets, which he set the bar very high. He was a natural leader and someone who I looked up and hope to aspire to for many years. I later joined the Regular Force and he was there for my swearing in Ceremony, which he was very proud of me and I felt he really helped set me on the right path..

I lost touch with Mike sadly over the years, but I am certain, the world is a better place because of him.
My heartfelt condolences to his family during this difficult time.

“It is not length of life, but depth of life.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson

Adrienne, Claire, Libby, Stead, Andrea – Our hearts are broken for you all.

To the entire family, I am So sorry for your loss. Michael was always the gentleman in any facet of life I had the pleasure to know himin, High school, CIC or at the curling club. RIP buddy.

Adrienne, Claire: As I’ve shared with you sweet Claire, your mom was my first friend when I moved to NL in grade 3 and we’ve stayed friends through many of life’s ups and downs.

Tomorrow you are going to Carnell’s 40 years too soon and it’s just not fair. There are no words of comfort that match the size of the loss for Mike and you and your family. I do know Mike was surrounded by love and support every day and no matter where Claire goes, she will always have family and friends in her corner every step of the way. Sending strength from Calgary as you move through the next few days.

Many people don’t get it right in 85 years; Mike clearly used his time to make his community better and clearly made others feel like they belonged and mattered. He will always be remembered and will live on through Claire’s big heart.

Big hugs xo

Major D. Dinn, Ottawa.

Adrienne and family, my deepest condolences on Mike’s passing. Mike and I had the pleasure of working together on numerous occasions over the past 25+ years and I, like many others, held him in very deep regard. While he had a passion for the cadet program, our last conversation while attending a ceremony at Government House centered on our families and it was clear that his proudest role was that of being a father. He will truly be missed.

My deepest condolences to the Crawford and Mercer families. To learn of Mike’s passing was a shock to say the least. I meet Mike during my time in the air cadets, both as a cadet and as an officer. I always considered him a friend and looked forward to running into him at cadet events. I have long since retired from the cadets but I had the pleasure of running into him at a parade last year at Government House and it was lovely to catch up. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Offering my deepest sympathy during this incredibly difficult time. Mike was such a strong advocate of the cadet program and was a great mentor over the years. Mike, you will be dearly missed. Rest easy, friend.

My deepest condolences to the Crawford and Mercer family on the passing one of the finest gentlemen I had the opportunity to know. I knew Mike from my time in the air cadet program. Oh my goodness Libby and Stead. My deepest sympathy on the loss of your son. Condolences to all the family. Thinking of you all at this very sad and difficult time.

No loss fits well in our lives but Mike is an incredibly difficult one to process. I had known Mike since he was a cadet in 880 and I was a new officer.

Over the decades we stayed in touch and he helped my career by putting my in touch with a company that he worked with and that set me on a path to where I am today.

To say Mike will be missed is an understatment because of all he dod for so many without question and without taking any credit.

Adrienne, sincere condolences to you and Claire and to all those who loved Michael.
We are thinking of you at this sad time .
