Obituary

We are saddened to announce the passing of our dear mother Mary Louise Picco at the age of 81. Mom passed peacefully away on May 30, 2024, in the presence of her family.

Mom was predeceased by her husband of 49 years John Lewis Picco in 2014 as well as her parents Ben and Evelyn Squires, and her brothers Winston and Vallis.

Leaving to remember and mourn her are: daughter Carmella Evans (Bob); sons Carl (Ann), and Richard (Kayla); Brother Halley Squires (Annie deceased); sisters Susie (Walter) Tucker, Grace Tucker; sister in law, Emily Sweet; grandchildren Kyle Evans, Nicholas Picco, Spencer Evans, Faith Evans, Joshua Picco and Praxton Picco, Special friends Georgina King, Margaret Rose, Mary Oakley, Linda Roberts, Gordie Miller and Jim Evans. Also, many nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.

The family would like to thank the staff of ICU and 4N HSC with a special thank you to the amazing staff of St Patrick’s Mercy Home for all their care, love and affection they have given Mom over the last year. Your kindness and compassion shown to our family will never be forgotten, she considered you all her Mudder.

A special thank you to Reverend Keeping who was there for Mom and our family at a moments notice with his comforting prayers.

Louise was a lifelong resident of St. Philips and was well connected to most members of the community.

She wore many hats outside of the home during her life. She was a cook at the Children’s Rehab before taking over her mother’s store, Picco’s Convenience. After the store she returned to caregiving. She loved to sing a few songs and she loved to hear a good story, which suited her time as a caregiver perfectly. She was a mother to many who called her Weezy. Mom told it like it was even if you didn’t want to hear it.

The family will receive visitors at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Saturday, June 1st and Sunday, June 2nd from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.

Funeral service will be held from St. Philip’s Anglican Church on Monday, June 3 at 11:00 a.m.

Family of the late Louise Picco,
Our sincere condolences and prayers in the loss of your loved one, Louise, a much loved Mother, Grandmother, Sister, and Friend to all. We have many fond memories of Louise especially on our school days at St. Philip’s School. We had lots of fun and laughter and getting in trouble at times as well…… being sent to the Principal’s Office. Louise always brought me a chocolate bar treat at school. She was a kind and generous person. But, one day in grade nine/ten Louise brought me a special bar of chocolate. In class Louise was seated behind me, She tapped me on the back and said, “I have some special chocolate I want to share with you, put your hand on the side, I’ll pass it to you.” I did just that and enjoyed some chocolate in class without being caught. After I had eaten the chocolate, Miss Louise tapped me again, and much to her delight told me that the special chocolate was EXLAX. Thanks Louise. End of story!
Louise got a lot of mileage out that prank and we had many a good laugh about it. The EXLAX worked and now you know the rest of the story.

We are sad today because Louise has died. We have lost a dear. Friend, and we will miss her greatly.. We give thanks for Louise and for her life and witness and give her back to God in the sure and certain hope of the Resurrection to eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. +
“Rest in Peace and Rise in Glory”
God’s peace, love and comfort be with you all.

To Louise’s family,
So very sorry to hear of her passing. Our deepest sympathy to all.

Dear Carmella, Carl and Richard,
We are all sorry for your loss.
Louise played an important role in all of our lives when she came to help our young family back in 1996. She joined our family as a nanny when Christian, and then Zoë, was born. Nanny Louise, as she was known in our house, like an extra Nan we needed, brought loving kindness, care and much needed help when we needed it most. She was a force of nature and spoke of you all daily. You were the center of her world. We all feel blessed to have known her send you our deepest condolences. Sincerely, The Bells

To all of Louise’s family—deepest sympathy on your loss.

So sorry for your loss. Condolences to all her family and friends.

Carmella,Carl and Richard very sorry to hear of your Mom’s passing. I know weezy was a pillar in the community as well as a kind gentle soul.

Sincerest of condolences to The Picco and Squires Clans. The obituary reads “She wore many hats …”. Indeed Louise did. In the pre ATM and Interac era, she was our banker (we would bring our paychecks to her and she would dish out funds as required). In the pre voicemail or texting era, we would, with confidence, leave “important” messages with her knowing she would always deliver. Before GPS, she would let us know when the RCMP (yes, pre RNC) was spotted and tell us which way they went. And, before alarm systems, she was held in such high esteem no one would dare vandalise or steal from her store for fear of having to answer to a small army of her “fans”. Many of us would drive or even walk an extra km to her store as we passed her competitor’s shop along the way. It has been too many years since I last saw you Weezy, but I can still hear that giggle. Louise was the hub of our community. If St. Philips had a Mt Rushmore …

Deepest sympathies to Louise’s family. I have fond memories as a teenager having chats with Weezy and buying 1 cigarette. Always warm, friendly, and kind. So sorry for your loss.

Condolences to the Family🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
