Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ethel Humphries (nee Hancock) on May 28, 2024 at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital.

Predeceased by her beloved husband Selby (d. 2011); parents William and Annie (nee Miller) Hancock; brothers Captain William (Daisy), and Victor; sister-in-law Olive (nee Windsor) Hancock; niece Elaine Pitcher, and nephew Allan Hancock.

Leaving to mourn her loving son Keith; daughter Rosalind Smyth (John), adored granddaughter, Rebecca Smyth (Piers Evans), and great grandson Felix Evans; sister-in-law Joan Holloway; devoted niece Daphne Gibson (Terry); loving nieces, and nephews; and extended family and friends.

Heartfelt thanks to Dr. Sandra Ennis for her years of excellent care and compassion of Ethel and support to the family. Also, thanks to Dr. Wee and attending nursing staff of 6 floor west, St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital.

Ethel’s early years were spent in Brooklyn, New York, later returning with her family to their original home in Brooklyn, Bonavista Bay. She married Selby in 1953 and set up their first home in Botwood. They later moved to Grand Falls, then to Corner Brook, and retired years later in St. John’s.

Ethel was always interested in arts and writing; she traveled extensively; and volunteered in several organizations when she resided in Corner Brook: Girl Guides of Canada, Western Memorial Regional Hospital Auxiliary, and United Church Women (UCW).

At Ethel’s request, cremation has taken place. Friends and family are invited to visit with family at Carnell’s Funeral Home, located on 329 Freshwater Road, St. John’s on Saturday, June 22 from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. Funeral service will be held at Wesley United Church, 101 Patrick Street, St. John’s on Sunday, June 23 at 2pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her honor may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
