Passed away with peace and grace at home in St. John’s surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, June 19th, 2024.  Derek was born in St. Lawrence, NL on March 25, 1955, son of the late Gordon and Marjorie (Critch) Hiscock of Clarenville.

Leaving with wonderful memories are his loving wife of 47 years, Arlene (Butler), children Erin, Kiersten (John), Grant, and Scott (Rachel), siblings Craig (Gwen), Heather (Chris), sister-in-law Diane, brother-in-law Rod (Cheryl) and his cherished grandchildren Maya, Joshua, Zoe, Caitlin, Jack and his 6th grandchild due in August.  Derek also leaves behind a number of special nieces, nephews and a large group of wonderful friends.

Derek grew up in Clarenville and graduated from Horwood High in 1972.  He graduated from Memorial University with a Bachelor of Commerce in 1977 and earned his CA designation in 1979.  He started his career with Peat Marwick Mitchell in 1977, and moved on to working for the late Harry Steele, who would become his respected mentor.  He worked at Eastern Provincial Airlines, Newfoundland Capital Corporation and as President of Robinson Blackmore Printing & Publishing.  His years with Robinson Blackmore brought Derek across Newfoundland and Labrador and throughout Canada when he was involved with the Canadian Community Newspapers Association (CCNA) of which he was President in 1997 and 1998.  After his newspaper career, Derek was the forever student and achieved the designations of CFP, CLU, CIM and FCSI.  For the past 18 years he has loved being a Senior Wealth Advisor at CIBC Wood Gundy and has especially enjoyed the last few years working side-by-side with his son Grant.

While he was always dedicated to his clients and career, the roles that he was most proud of were that of husband, father and Poppa.  He adored his wife, Arlene, who was his best friend and confidante.  From their humble beginnings with peanut butter sandwiches at Dunworkin’ Campground in PEI to traveling the high seas, it didn’t matter where they went as long as they were together.

Derek and Arlene traveled extensively and you would rarely see one without the other.  They enjoyed spending time in Florida and loved their time spent at their cabin where you would find Derek at his happiest watching over his children and grandchildren.  You would often hear him say, while admiring his family, “This is what it’s all about!”.

Derek knew how to appreciate each and every day, whether traveling, relaxing with family or even after being diagnosed with cancer.  He maintained his positive attitude and cherished each day “on the green side of the sod”.

Those who knew Derek well knew that he truly believed that “We’re here for a good time, not a long time”.

Special thanks to the many people who provided care since his diagnosis at the Health Sciences Centre, Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre as well as the special nurses with Community Health and Palliative Care Team.

Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, St. John’s, Sunday, June 23, 2-4pm and 7-9pm.  Funeral service Monday, June 24 at St. James United Church, 330 Elizabeth Avenue at 2pm. Inurnment to follow at a later date.

Arlene and family. Derek was one of the sincerest people in our Commerce class of ‘77. Always a smile and a laugh with a great sense of humour and in later life, always time to stop and catch up on one another’s lives. He was genuinely a friend. We first met at age 14 in cadet camp. Then in tenth grade at EduCanada exchange in Ottawa. And then through five years of the first co-op faculty of business class. The news of his diagnosis and now his passing affected me deeply. and because of that I know that you all have been even more deeply affected and are dealing with a much greater sense of loss. He was a memory creator throughout his life and I hope that the memories he has created with you all will keep him with you in your minds and hearts.. Our thoughts are with you all.

I am so sad to hear that he has passed but I know a heart as pure as his will live forever in all who loved him . May he rest in peace…. Susan Tiller

That family cabin backdrop. If there were such a thing as true white picket fences, they would appear all around the Hiscock family home. It’s as close as they come. I appreciate his message to us all “we’re here for a good time, not a long time.” I’ve been reflecting if 46 years married and getting to meet 5 grandschildren is “a long time.” And it’s never enough. Through my friendship with Kiersten and Erin, I know your dad made the most of this quality time and I hope the many happy memories bring comfort in the long days and firsts ahead.

Love and hugs to you all xo

Arlene and family. My deepest and sincere condolences on your loss. Derek was a great man. We first met when he hired me back in 2001 to work at Robinson Blackmore .Derek was the ultimate newspaper/printing individual. We had a great time and many laughs as we continued to build the company. I had the honour of moving over to Nova Scotia with him to generate an IPO with Gerard Adams and Bob Inkpen to form a new company called Optipress. We had a great time on the road making 49 presentations in a two week period. Derek was a blast on the road .He was funny and liked to have a good time but always had the business objective swirling in his mind .I had a lot of good memories with Derek . He loved you and his family and often talked about being blessed. He was a great friend, boss and above all a true gentleman. He will be missed by many. Bless you and your family Arlene .It was Derek who gave me the best career opportunity in my life.

I remember Derek from his days at Memorial the graduates of the first Coop Commerce class 1977 were very special people.

Oh Arlene I was so saddened by the new of Derek’s passing. I know how much you loved him & him you & can’t imagine the pain you’re in. Every time I came home I visited your home and Derek would always call me his favourite cousin & we’d laugh about that.
